Chapter Twelve

In the days following the symphony fund-raiser, Lily attempted to put the date with Shane into perspective. He’d turned a typical foundation event into something memorable, but that didn’t mean she should read more into it than that.

They’d had fun. Sitting in the ice cream parlor in a couture gown and full makeup had been a hoot. He’d gotten her to laugh, to relax, and even made her feel good about herself.

Despite Lily’s worry, Marisa hadn’t commented on her absence. The most important part of the evening was greeting everyone as the party got underway, and Lily supposed that since she’d been there for that, her mother was choosing to ignore her early departure.

Harp had called a couple of days ago, dropping an unsubtle hint that she didn’t want to go back to teaching come March, and would be delighted if Lily came to her senses and agreed to take on a design project with her and Dani.

Lily had brushed it off, but then she’d accidentally mentioned the work she was doing for Shane.

Within minutes of hanging up with Harp, Dani had called, eager for all the details. Lily had to admit she was having more fun helping Shane than she’d expected. Seeing the interior of Dolly’s house come together gave her a satisfaction that teaching alone simply couldn’t bring.

But a favor for a friend was one thing. Going pro was a different animal entirely.

As far as Shane was concerned, gray was gray was gray, morning, noon and night. But Lily told him this was not the case and since he’d asked for her advice, he figured he ought to at least hear her out.

However, she seemed more interested in watching him play with Valentine than in evaluating the painted areas.

She stood with her arms crossed over her abdomen, her face a study in deliberate carelessness. She was gnawing on something.

“You look mad,” he commented, taking the rope toy from Valentine and tossing it again. “Not at me, I hope. If it ends in violence, the courts will call it premeditated.”

She frowned and huffed. “I’m not mad.”

“Let’s see. Closed body language. Frowning. Vehement denial. You’re definitely mad. And I don’t think it’s because there are three squares, all the exact same color, with different names painted on the back wall.”

“Fog Mist isn’t anywhere near the same as Cloudier. And don’t even get me started on Gray Mist.” She uncrossed her arms, rolled her shoulders back and gave him a huge, patently fake smile. “Not mad. See?”

He couldn’t help but laugh. He’d been doing that more and more lately, thanks to her. It felt good.

Valentine took advantage of Shane’s momentary lapse of attention and yanked the rope toy out of his hand, jerking his bad shoulder. He winced. Served him right.

Lily took the dog toy from Valentine and threw it across the hallway into the next room.

Then she crossed her arms again and watched, expectantly.

Valentine trotted back into the room, the toy in his mouth, and went straight to Shane before dropping it.
